after the publication of his selected letters and a biography by Andrew Motion, Philip Larkin suddenly became – in the gleeful rhetoric of Britain’s book-page pundits – „a petty-bourgeois fascist,“ embodying a „rancid and insidious philistinism“ and a „repellent, smelly, inadequate masculinity.“
